Drafting Haredim to the IDF: A Heated Discussion in ‘The Big Debate’ Series
The most recent event in The Big Debate’ series at M.D. Katz JLIC @ Tel Aviv University tackled the controversial issue of drafting Haredim into the IDF. This session, held in front of an engaged audience of over 50 students, sparked dynamic conversations on topics ranging from Milchemet Mitzvah and the exemption of the tribe of Levi to the cultural significance of Talmud Torah and Moshe Rabbeinu’s charge at the end of Bamidbar. For both debaters and audience members, the discussion was not only intellectually stimulating but also deeply educational, providing a unique lens into a topic that continues to shape Israeli society.
“The Big Debate series is about more than just discussing complex issues,” shared Rabbi Eitan and Elana Phillips, the directors of M.D. Katz JLIC at Tel Aviv University. “It’s about creating a space where students feel empowered to challenge their assumptions, articulate their beliefs, and build bridges with one another. We’re incredibly proud of the passion and commitment our students bring to these conversations, and we look forward to seeing this initiative continue to grow.”
The Origins of ‘The Big Debate’
The Big Debate series began in May 2024 as a platform for students to explore and discuss critical issues through structured arguments and open dialogue. Created by M.D. Katz JLIC @ Tel Aviv University and led by Rabbi Eitan and Elana Phillips, the series aims to educate, engage, and challenge students while fostering community on campus. Each debate brings together students from diverse backgrounds who are united by a shared passion for learning about Israel and engaging with Jewish values.
The inaugural debate on campus antisemitism was inspired by the Columbia University protests and centered on the proposition, “Should Jews Be Taking More Action Against Campus Antisemitism?” Over 60 attendees, including a six-member debate team and two moderators, participated in this emotionally charged discussion. The event set a high standard for the series, proving that The Big Debate could address sensitive topics with depth and respect.
Exploring Provocative Questions
Subsequent debates have continued to tackle thought-provoking subjects:
- “Is Antizionism Antithetical to Jewish Values?” challenged participants to reflect on the core tenets of Jewish identity and their interplay with contemporary issues.
- “Is a Jewish State Necessary for Preserving Jewish Safety and Identity?” encouraged students to consider and respond to questions they might face as future campus activists.
Each debate not only fostered a robust exchange of ideas but also allowed participants to sharpen their critical thinking skills while engaging with their peers in meaningful ways.
Looking Ahead
With plans to host two to three debates each semester, M.D. Katz JLIC @ Tel Aviv University is poised to expand The Big Debate series to include expert panels featuring professors and rabbis. These future sessions aim to deepen the educational value of the series and broaden its impact. The initiative continues to serve as a cornerstone of JLIC’s mission to create spaces for dynamic learning and community building.
The Big Debate is more than just a series of discussions—it’s a vibrant forum for students to grapple with important questions, connect with one another, and engage with the broader Jewish and Israeli communities.
