In the heart of Jerusalem, a groundbreaking initiative is taking shape, offering unprecedented support to young English-speaking women dedicating themselves to national service in Israel. The JLIC Sherut program is transforming the experience of Anglo and Lone Sherut Leumi volunteers, providing them with a robust support network that goes far beyond traditional assistance.
At its core, the program recognizes the unique challenges faced by young women who leave their families abroad or English-speaking citizens who choose to serve their country with national service. These dedicated volunteers now have a lifeline—a support system designed specifically for their needs. With over 100 women already connected through a bustling WhatsApp community, the program has quickly become a vital resource for those navigating the complexities of national service.
The JLIC Sherut program offers a multifaceted approach to community building. Volunteers can now access and help create a wide range of social and personal development opportunities. From energetic running groups to Chanuka chaburas the program ensures that these young women have outlets for torah learning, physical activity, and social connection. Weekly events have become a cornerstone of the initiative, providing a consistent touchpoint for community engagement and mutual support. Thanks to JCT – Tal, which is located steps away from the sherut housing in the Kiryat Moshe neighborhood of Jerusalem, JLIC Sherut has access to space for their programs and gatherings.
Behind this innovative program stands a dedicated coordinator, Aliyah Derfler, a Bat Sherut herself working for JLIC Jerusalem and the JLIC Sherut Network, working tirelessly to create meaningful experiences for her peers. Derfler made aliyah with her family four years ago from Oregon to Gush Etzion. Her collaboration with Rav Jeremy and Emily Tibbetts of the JLIC Jerusalem Community brings additional depth and mentorship to the initiative. The program seamlessly bridges the gap between organized support and personal growth, offering programming that speaks directly to the needs of young women in national service.
“What drew me to this role was the opportunity to work directly with people and support a cause that deeply resonates with my personal values. It’s a mission that reflects the kind of assistance I would want to receive myself.” – Aliyah Derfler
What sets this program apart is its holistic approach. It’s not just about providing activities—it’s about creating a genuine community. Learning programs complement the social events, ensuring that volunteers have opportunities for personal growth, cultural connection, and spiritual enrichment. The network becomes more than just a support system; it’s a home away from home for these remarkable young women.
As the program continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the power of community support. These volunteers are not just serving Israel—they are building connections, finding strength in shared experiences, and creating lasting memories that will shape their lives long after their service year concludes.
The JLIC Sherut community is a celebration of young women’s dedication, resilience, and commitment to making a difference. For every volunteer who joins, a world of opportunity, connection, and personal growth awaits.
