Questions of War -A powerful morning of reflection and inspiration
On Thursday, March 6, members of the JLIC community at the University of Illinois gathered for a powerful and moving presentation by Rabbi Binyanim Zimmerman, an officer in the IDF rabbinate and head of the Mizrachi Musmachim program. The event, titled “Questions of War: Inspiration for a Nation,” drew a captivated audience eager to hear firsthand accounts from this unique period in Jewish history. This meaningful gathering was coordinated by JLIC directors Rabbi Shmuel and Jackie Hauss, who worked diligently to bring this important voice to campus.
A Changed Perspective
Rabbi Zimmerman spoke eloquently about the profound shift in the relationship between Judaism and the Israeli military since October 7. He noted a remarkable transformation in how Judaism is viewed not only within the army ranks but throughout Israeli society. The rabbi shared that what had once been viewed by some as merely traditional or cultural has become a source of strength, unity, and purpose during these challenging times.
Stories of Heroism and Sacrifice
Some of the most moving moments of the morning came when Rabbi Zimmerman shared stories of heroes who died al kiddush Hashem (sanctifying God’s name). These accounts of bravery and sacrifice resonated deeply with attendees, many of whom were visibly moved. The rabbi detailed the solemn and sacred work of identifying those killed in the conflict, a responsibility the rabbinate approaches with the utmost care and respect.
The “Halachic Hotline”
Perhaps one of the most fascinating aspects of Rabbi Zimmerman’s presentation was his discussion of the “halachic hotline” that has been operating since the start of the war. Soldiers and commanders call this service with questions about Jewish law in the context of military operations. The rabbi presented several examples of the types of shailot (halachic questions) they receive, highlighting the complexity of applying ancient Jewish law to modern warfare situations.
World Leaders in Identification
Rabbi Zimmerman explained how Israel has, by necessity, become the global leader in identifying the deceased. He recounted how Israeli officials initially traveled to America to learn techniques and best practices, but have since developed methodologies that surpass international standards. This expertise, born of tragic necessity, now serves as a model for other nations.
Spiritual Awakening Among Soldiers
One of the most surprising elements of the rabbi’s talk was his account of the spiritual awakening he has witnessed among soldiers, particularly those who previously had little connection to religious practice. Rabbi Zimmerman shared touching stories about the mesiras nefesh (self-sacrifice) of soldiers, including many who are not daati (religiously observant), taking on mitzvot such as wearing tzitzit and affixing mezuzot to their quarters.
The rabbi displayed images of the impressive Aron (ark) containing hundreds of Torah scrolls available for each military unit, emphasizing how Judaism has become a source of comfort and strength for many during this difficult time.
Impact of the Rabbinate
Rabbi Zimmerman emphasized that there was not so much a call to action as an appreciation for the incredible impact Judaism has on the IDF. He explained how all soldiers benefit from having an army with a dedicated rabbinate supporting them, providing spiritual guidance, comfort in times of uncertainty, and answers to complex ethical questions that arise during conflict.
The breakfast event concluded with attendees expressing gratitude for Rabbi Zimmerman’s insights and perspective. Many commented on how the presentation had given them a deeper understanding of the intersection between Judaism and the Israeli military during this crucial period in Jewish history.
Rabbi Zimmerman’s visit to the University of Illinois was part of a broader speaking tour, as he had plans to visit a number of other JLIC locations after his stop in Champaign-Urbana. This tour allowed him to bring his valuable insights and firsthand experiences to Jewish students across multiple university campuses, strengthening connections between American Jewish college students and the realities faced in Israel.
