In the vibrant landscape of cultural diversity and communal bonds, the JLIC West French Torah Learning Program stands as a shining example of a community coming together to celebrate language, heritage, and friendship. This weekly meetup, led by the dynamic Rabbi Zalman Partouche and coordinated by a dedicated Yavneh Fellow, has become a staple for French-speaking Jewish individuals in the LA area.
The Birth of a Program
The roots of the JLIC West French Learning Program trace back to an inspiring collaboration between Professor Mickael Chekroun, a UCLA Math Professor, and the JLIC West Coast leadership. Professor Chekroun, impressed by the success of the Persian programming, volunteered to initiate a similar program for the French-speaking community. Although he now resides in Israel, his legacy continues through this thriving initiative.
Leadership and Coordination
At the helm of the program, Rabbi Zalman Partouche takes charge of leading the classes, ensuring that each session is a rich and immersive experience for the participants. The organizational efforts are in the capable hands of Yavneh YP Fellow, Nathan Abergel, who provides structure and continuity for the programs.
Student Leadership
The French Learning Program has seen a succession of passionate student leaders. Raphael Nacache, Raphael Tordjman, and currently Nathan Abergel, have steered the ship as student body presidents. Their commitment to fostering a sense of community and learning torah in French is truly commendable.
Weekly Gatherings
With 110 members actively participating in the WhatsApp group and the broader JLIC French community, the French Learning Program attracts a dedicated following.
“Every Monday evening we see a gathering of 20-25 individuals eager to learn, connect, and engage.” Says Rabbi Kaplan, Director of JLIC West Coast.
The program seamlessly blends educational components with the joy of socializing, as attendees indulge in delightful food and drinks.
Beyond Learning:
Beyond the classroom setting, the French Jewish Meetup Program extends its reach into social events, fostering an environment where members can bond over shared interests. From coordinated ski trips to other cultural gatherings, the program goes beyond learning, creating a space for individuals to build lasting connections.
Cultural Appreciation
The French community within JLIC West not only finds solace in learning in their native language but also takes pride in connecting with their local community. The program becomes a bridge between cultural roots and the present, allowing participants to celebrate their heritage while actively engaging with the broader Jewish community.
The JLIC West French Jewish Meetup Program is a testament to the power of community, cultural appreciation, and education. As Professor Mickael Chekroun’s legacy lives on, the program continues to thrive under the guidance of Rabbi Zalman and the leadership of dedicated student presidents. Beyond the classrooms, this program is sowing the seeds of lasting friendships and a strong sense of community, proving that language and culture can truly bring people together.
