The desert became a canvas of Jewish unity as 110 students from across Israel’s campuses gathered for an extraordinary JLIC Shabbaton at Merchav Am’s historic “Chan” – an ancient travelers’ inn that transformed into a vibrant hub of connection and learning.
The Vision Behind the Gathering
Tova Levine, JLIC Co-Director at Technion, shared the inspiration behind the event:
“We wanted to create more than just a weekend retreat. Our goal was to break down the barriers between different campus communities, allowing students to connect, learn, and grow together in a unique, immersive environment.”
A Journey of Connection and Discovery
The Shabbaton began with an enchanting nature walk through Ein Avdat National Park, where students walked through breathtaking desert landscapes, setting the tone for a weekend of exploration and connection. As the day ended, participants gathered for a unique outdoor Mincha and Kabbalat Shabbat service led by R’ Evan Levine, the JLIC Director from Technion. His inspiring dvar Torah echoed against the desert backdrop, transforming the ancient “Chan” into a sacred space of spiritual reflection.
Shabbat dinner brought together students from eight different campuses, creating a vibrant mosaic of Jewish life. Chaya Bracha Gordon from Ben Gurion University shared a meaningful dvar Torah that sparked conversations that would continue late into the night. The evening program, masterfully curated by Technion students Yael Ratson, Eva Trope, and Lev Kramer, created an atmosphere of warmth and inclusivity.
The night truly came alive during the tisch led by Yoni Davis from Technion. For over two hours, students sang, shared stories, and connected under a full moon that illuminated the desert landscape. Some participants ventured on moonlit walks, while others engaged in spirited discussions and board games, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Shabbat morning began with a relaxed coffee and chabura session led by R’ Evan Levine, followed by shacharit that featured a thought-provoking dvar Torah by Shaun Regenbaum from Jerusalem. The late morning offered participants a choice of three incredible learning opportunities that showcased the depth and diversity of Jewish thought:
Tova Levine led an interactive “Energize with Emunah” workshop that challenged participants to explore their spiritual connections. Simultaneously, R’ Jeremy Tibbetts delved into complex questions of divine justice, asking “Can the Judge of the Earth Act Unjustly?” – a shiur that provoked deep philosophical discussions. R’ Nadav and Yaffy Newman offered a mystery shiur that kept participants intrigued.
The afternoon unfolded with a community walk led by Merchav Am residents Moshe and Shayna Bernstein, offering insights into local community life. Emily Zimmer Tibbetts, JLIC Director from Jerusalem, shared a powerful dvar Torah during lunch that continued the morning’s themes of connection and spiritual growth.
A Tapestry of Diversity
The Shabbaton brought together students from diverse backgrounds:
- Campuses: Ben Gurion, Bar Ilan, Givat Shmuel, Technion, Haifa University, Herziliya, Reichman, and Jerusalem
- International Representation: Brazil, USA, South Africa, Belgium, and the UK
Memorable Moments
- Kabbalat Shabbat under the starlit desert sky
- A moonlit tisch lasting over two hours
- Desert walks that connected participants with the landscape and each other
- Meaningful conversations and new friendships formed
Looking Forward
Inspired by the success of this 18-25 age group Shabbaton, the JLIC team is already planning future gatherings, with a potential event for those over 25 on the horizon.
The weekend stood as a powerful testament to the strength of Jewish community – bringing together diverse individuals under the vast desert sky, creating memories and connections that would resonate far beyond those magical Shabbat hours.
Here’s to many more such inspiring gatherings!
