In the midst of conflict and hardship, stories of unity and support often emerge as beacons of hope. Rabbi Ariel Cohen, The JLIC Rabbi at Brandeis University and an IDF Commander, shares his firsthand experiences during the war in Gaza. The following is a summary of his experiences that he shared during a presentation given on Saturday night 1/13/24 in Brookline MA, an event with his students, and a presentation at Penn.
From the incredible unity of the Jewish people to the overwhelming support received, Rav Ariel, as his students refer to him, shares his experience on the positive aspects that unfolded amid challenging times.
Community Support and Gratitude
Rav Ariel expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from communities, particularly from the Brandeis University community where he serves as the JLIC Co-director along with his wife Dorit. He acknowledges the generosity of individuals who donated equipment, funds, and time to aid the soldiers defending the country.
Personal Sacrifices
Rav Ariel shared details about the sacrifices made by individuals who went above and beyond to support him and his fellow soldiers. Families and students from Brandeis University, upon receiving requests for equipment, not only fulfilled the requests but also expressed a willingness to do more asking for additional Amazon Wish Lists so that they could be part of the war effort while thousands of miles away here in the US.
“Just so you understand, our basement was so full of boxes, they reached the ceiling….The Amazon truck unloaded in our house for two hours every day.” Rav Ariel continued “…this selflessness and commitment to the well-being of the IDF soldiers reflect the strength of the Jewish community.”
Unexpected Allies
Rav Ariel recounted a heartwarming incident at the airport where a stranger stepped forward to cover the extra costs of transporting 7 large duffel bags of donated equipment. When he landed in Israel someone else helped him get through the airport and transported him to his home. These acts of kindness from someone he didn’t know highlights the solidarity of the Jewish people.
Emotional and Moral Support
The support extended beyond material donations. Cohen emphasizes the impact letters from students, parents, and various organizations can have on the emotional and mental wellbeing of the IDF soldiers who are away from home for extended periods of time. These letters helped boost the morale of the troops stationed in Gaza.
Two stories as powerful examples of Jewish unity.
Tzomet Gilat – A Haven for Soldiers
In the midst of the conflict, the first story of unity unfolds at Tzomet Gilat, a crucial junction on the way to Gaza. This junction, supported by generous donations, became a sanctuary for soldiers in need. The donor’s initiative resulted in the creation of a complex that offered not just essentials, but a comprehensive support system for the troops.
The complex at Tzomet Gilat is more than just a place to rest; it is a symbol of collective care and unity. Soldiers passing through this central junction on their way to and from the battlefield are provided with an array of services. Free food stations, offering shawarma, hamburgers, and more, it mimics the atmosphere of a wedding hall. Soldiers can choose whatever they want, emphasizing the importance of nourishment and comfort during these challenging times.
Beyond just meals, the complex offers additional services such as massages, free haircuts, and even a laundry station. This holistic approach recognized the soldiers’ physical and mental well-being. The initiative not only eases the burden on the soldiers but also highlights the extent to which people are willing to go to support those who are defending the nation.
A Couple’s Act of Hospitality
The second story he shared delves into the generosity and hospitality of an Israeli couple during the conflict. This couple, who themselves serve in top-secret positions in the army, offered their home to soldiers in need. Their house, which is located in a community that was one of the first to be entered by terrorists on Oct 7th, became a symbol of resilience and unwavering support.
The couple’s offer went beyond a mere invitation; it was an open-hearted gesture that included the use of their entire home. The soldiers, looking for places to stay amid the conflict, found not just shelter but a fully equipped space. The couple insisted that the soldiers make use of their kitchen, beds, bathrooms, and even their laundry facilities. The soldiers, in turn, transformed the empty house into their temporary home, a safe haven in the midst of chaos.
This act of hospitality is a powerful example of unity, showcasing the deep connection within the Israeli community. Their gesture stands as a testament to the strength of the Israeli people and their commitment to one another, even in the face of adversity.
Sharing his Experiences with his Students at Brandeis and Beyond
Rav Ariel and Dorit warmly welcomed the JLIC Brandeis University students into their home for an insightful and heartfelt conversation for those who were eager to learn from his first-hand accounts. Rav Ariel shared the stories of his experiences and profound lessons he gleaned from his time serving in Gaza. The intimate gathering allowed the students to engage directly with Rav Ariel, offering them a unique opportunity to understand the complexities of the conflict and the resilience of the Israeli people. This personal encounter undoubtedly left a lasting impression on the Brandeis community, deepening their appreciation for the challenges faced by those on the frontlines and the strength that unity and support can bring in times of adversity.
Speaking at Penn
Rav Ariel gave a compelling and thought-provoking presentation titled “Living in America and Fighting in Gaza: Reflections on the War First Hand Experiences,” to the University of Pennsylvania’s JLIC community, alongside invited guests and JLIC donors. On January 31, 2024, Rav Ariel reshared his firsthand experiences as an Israeli soldier serving in Gaza, offering a unique perspective on the challenges faced by those who straddle two worlds – the comforts of life in America and the responsibilities of defending their homeland. The event provided an invaluable opportunity for the Penn JLIC community to engage with Rav Ariel and gain insights into the complexities of his dual identity and the impact of the ongoing conflict. This intimate setting allowed for a deeper understanding of the experiences and sacrifices made by individuals like Rav Ariel, who navigate the complexities of living in America while being directly involved in the tumultuous realities of war in Israel.
Miraculous Acts:
Rav Ariel briefly touches upon the miraculous events and experiences on the battlefield, underscoring the resilience and determination of the soldiers. He invites those interested in hearing more about these extraordinary events to reach out, emphasizing the importance of sharing these stories with communities.
Rav Ariel concludes each of his accounts with a prayer for the safe return of hostages, healing for the wounded, and the swift resolution of the conflict. The overarching message he delivers is one of gratitude for the unwavering support and unity displayed by the US Jewish community, illustrating the strength that emerges from collective efforts during challenging times.
