At Brooklyn College, JLIC is more than a resource for Jewish learning—it’s a vibrant hub for building community, fostering leadership, and exploring Torah in innovative and accessible ways. Through diverse classes like Lunch & Learn, JLIC keeps students engaged with Judaism, no matter their background or prior knowledge. These programs are not unique to Brooklyn; JLIC directors across campuses offer similar initiatives, ensuring that students everywhere can find meaningful ways to connect to Torah and Jewish values.
Learning for All Levels: Hot Topics and Timeless Lessons
Rabbi Daniel Albert, Co-Director of JLIC Brooklyn, brings a creative and thought-provoking approach to his Monday shiur, “Hot Topics in Judaism.” From questions like “Is capitalism a Torah ideal?” to explorations of halachic dilemmas such as organ donation, Rabbi Albert addresses contemporary issues through the lens of Jewish law and values. With an average of 20 participants per session, the class attracts a mix of seasoned learners and those just beginning their journey in Torah study.
“I’ve never repeated a shiur in 2.5 years,” says Rabbi Albert, emphasizing the dynamic and ever-relevant nature of these discussions. The debates sparked in class often continue long after, as students walk to their next lecture or catch up weeks later to revisit a topic. The Parsha shiur on Thursdays offers another opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of Torah, while previous sessions like “Ladle of Inspiration” combined homemade soup with a bite-sized Torah insight to nourish body and soul.
Women’s Learning: Connection Through Conversation and Creativity
Every Tuesday at 12:30 PM, Marjorie Albert, Co-Director of JLIC Brooklyn, leads a Women’s Lunch & Learn. This 30-minute session creates a welcoming space for Jewish day school graduates and public school alumni alike, with a dozen or more participants each week. The learning is chaburah-style, encouraging active discussion on topics like personal growth, emunah, and interpersonal relationships.
To foster deeper bonds, special sessions occur three times a semester, blending hands-on activities with student-led divrei Torah. Whether making resin bookmarks or arranging flower bouquets, participants enjoy a relaxed social setting alongside their learning. These events consistently draw larger crowds, with more than 20 attendees each time.
Fostering Community and Leadership
Beyond learning, JLIC at Brooklyn College cultivates a sense of belonging and empowers students to take on leadership roles. By encouraging students to share their insights during classes and at special events, JLIC helps them build confidence and take ownership of their Jewish journey.
The impact of JLIC Lunch & Learn programs extends far beyond Brooklyn College. Across campuses, similar initiatives ensure that Jewish students—whether they’re grabbing lunch between classes or engaging in one-on-one learning with JLIC directors—can find creative, meaningful ways to connect with Torah and Jewish values.
For Rabbi Daniel and Marjorie Albert, the goal is clear: to keep students engaged with Judaism while creating a warm, inclusive community where everyone feels inspired to learn, grow, and lead.
