The halls of UCLA bustled with spiritual energy as Rabbi Aryeh and Sharona Kaplan orchestrated a remarkable series of High Holiday and Sukkot celebrations this fall. The JLIC directors transformed the campus into a vibrant center of Jewish life, weaving together prayer, learning, and community.

Students streamed into daily minyanim throughout Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. The steady rhythm of prayer services anchored the community, creating sacred spaces within the academic setting.

The Kaplans opened their hearts—and their table—to students, hosting an impressive array of fifteen festive meals across the holiday season. Four celebratory meals brightened the Rosh Hashanah weekend, while thoughtfully prepared pre- and post-fast meals supported students through their Yom Kippur observance. The first weekend of Sukkot brought four more gatherings, culminating in five joyous meals during Simchat Torah.

Learning flourished alongside prayer and celebration. Students eagerly participated in thirteen Torah classes, diving deep into holiday themes and traditions. The JLIC directors served as trusted guides, providing clear halachic direction to students navigating religious observance on campus.

The numbers tell a story of remarkable community engagement: 1,100 meals nourished bodies and souls, while hundreds of students joined in daily prayer services. Yet beyond these impressive statistics lies an even richer narrative of spiritual growth and connection. Students gathered to shake the lulav and etrog, share words of Torah, and forge lasting friendships.

This transformation of campus life into a thriving Jewish community stems from widespread support. Generous donors and the broader UCLA community have embraced JLIC’s mission, creating a foundation for these meaningful experiences.

The High Holiday season may have concluded, but its impact resonates throughout campus. Students carry forward the spiritual momentum, strengthened by newly forged bonds and deepened religious connection. As the academic year unfolds, JLIC continues to nurture this vibrant community, building on the moments shared during the holiday.
