As Passover approaches, Jewish communities around the world prepare to embark on a journey of remembrance, reflection, and renewal. For the Jewish students at UCLA, this sacred time is not only about honoring tradition but also about coming together as a community to celebrate and connect. At the forefront of this communal effort are Rabbi Aryeh and Sharona Kaplan, leaders of the JLIC community at UCLA.
Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. It is a time when families and communities gather to retell the story of Exodus, reaffirming their commitment to freedom and justice. For many students away from home, celebrating Passover can be challenging, but Rabbi Aryeh and Sharona Kaplan are dedicated to ensuring that no student feels alone during this special time.
One of the central pillars of the JLIC West Coast Passover program is the distribution of over 1000 meals throughout the week in coordination with the UCLA Hillel. These meals not only provide nourishment for the body but also serve as a reminder of the collective strength and support within the community. Whether it’s a traditional Seder meal or a simple lunch, each meal is infused with love and care, reflecting the spirit of Passover.
But the JLIC West Coast Passover program goes beyond just providing meals. Rabbi Aryeh and Sharona Kaplan, along with their team, will be running Seders for students, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate in this ancient tradition. The Seders, with their rich rituals and symbolic foods, serve as a reminder of the importance of passing down our heritage from generation to generation.
In addition to the Seders, the JLIC West Coast Passover program will be assisting students in celebrating the holiday in their own unique ways. Whether it’s hosting gatherings, providing educational resources, or simply offering a listening ear, Rabbi Aryeh and Sharona Kaplan are committed to supporting students in their spiritual journey.
Passover is a time when the community comes together to create links between the generations, keeping the story alive for future generations. It is a time when we reflect on our shared history and our shared destiny as a people. Through their tireless efforts, Rabbi Aryeh and Sharona Kaplan are ensuring that the spirit of Passover continues to thrive on the West Coast.
As we prepare to embark on this journey of remembrance and renewal, let us take a moment to appreciate the dedication and commitment all those who work tirelessly to ensure that no one is left behind during this time. May this Passover be a time of joy, reflection, and connection for all.
